It’s one of the cruel ironies of life – the smoother things are running, the less people notice. Be honest with yourself; when’s the last time you drove through a city centre and noted how effective the traffic management systems were? Or the last time you went into a shop and commented on the outstanding customer service?
Of course the sad truth is that, more often than not, we only really pay attention when things are going wrong – meaning too often the people who deserve praise go unnoticed.
As a safety manager it’s your role to ensure things run as safely as possible. While everyone else is busy going about their business, you are working away tirelessly in the background to improve the safety of all those around you – the work you do might even help to save people’s lives! Yet the better you are at your job, the more invisible you become…
That’s where the RoSPA Awards comes in.
Dating back 58 years, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Occupational Health and Safety Awards is the largest and longest-running programme of its kind in the UK and one of the most prestigious in the world. Designed to recognise organisations’ commitment to accidents and ill health preventions, it is open to businesses and organisations of all types across the UK and overseas. It looks at entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.
As a means of increasing visibility, creating PR opportunities and benchmarking success, the scheme is perfect for safety professionals. What’s more, it’s not just huge multi-national companies that are entering the awards. In 2014 it is anticipated that more than 1,500 awards will be presented to organisations of all sizes, with over 4,000 winners and guests expected to attend RoSPA’s daytime ceremonies and evening banquets at the following locations:
- Wednesday, May 14 and Thursday, May 15 at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel
- Tuesday, June 17 at ExCeL London, to co-locate with Safety and Health Expo
- Thursday, September 18 at the Hilton Glasgow Hotel, as the main feature of a two-day programme including the 20th RoSPA Scotland Occupational Safety and Health Congress.
Sponsored by NEBOSH and supported by the HSE, the RoSPA Awards aren’t just a unique opportunity to celebrate your achievements and gain international recognition for your efforts – they’re the only scheme of their kind to reward year-on-year success, with non-competitive awards marking achievement at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels. Organisations maintaining high standards can win gold medals, president’s awards and orders of distinction. Competitive awards are presented in more than 20 sectors, and also recognise excellence in specialist areas, such as the management of occupational road risk (MORR), workforce involvement and more.
Entry to the Awards helps support RoSPA’s charitable mission – reducing injuries and saving lives – by helping bolster standards throughout industry. As Tom Mullarkey, our chief executive says:
“The RoSPA Awards are a key fixture in the health and safety calendar and showcase organisations’ ongoing commitment to maintaining a glowing health and safety record and culture. Our awards encourage the raising of accident and ill health prevention standards across the board and those who have gained recognition for their achievements already, particularly during tough economic conditions, raise the bar for other organisations to follow, inspiring them to do likewise.”
Finally, the RoSPA Awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate your success, as the infographic below illustrates:
